Tara Tots Playgroup
At Tara Pattana International School, a whole-school commitment to inclusion ensures that a wide range of learning needs are identified early and supported effectively. English Language and Learning Support (ELLS) provides focused language and learning support so that students can fully access the curriculum, participate with confidence and thrive as active members of our international community.
Our ELLS programme is designed to empower students to take part fully in every aspect of life at TPIS - socially, emotionally and academically. We focus on building the language skills and confidence they need to access the mainstream curriculum, connect with classmates and thrive in our international school community.
Language assessments
Student progress in English is closely tracked through regular standardised assessments and teacher insight. Termly reviews allow us to respond quickly, adjust support and provide targeted teaching so every learner makes strong, measurable progress throughout the year.
Intensive Support Programme
Our intensive ELLS programme provides targeted, small-group support so students can rapidly build the language and skills they need to thrive. In both Primary and Secondary, learners receive daily early-morning ELLS sessions, focused withdrawal from selected subjects and in-class support.
Transitional Support Programme
Our Transitional Support Programme offers a flexible blend of in-class and small-group ELLS support, helping students steadily build the confidence and language skills to work more independently, with daily early-morning sessions, targeted reading interventions and tailored subject support in both Primary and Secondary.
Homework
Our ELLS homework is designed to be purposeful, achievable and closely matched to each child’s level, replacing mainstream tasks where necessary and adapted in both Primary and Secondary so that every learner can succeed.
Partnership with parents
Partnership between home and school is central to success for English-language learners: strong use of the home language builds thinking skills and cultural pride, while English as the shared language of school helps every child connect, make friends and feel fully included
On entry to Tara Pattana, all students complete a reading-age test and, from Year 1 upwards, an admissions assessment that includes the National Group Reading Test (NGRT), which compares their reading skills to the UK national average. For students on our English Language & Learning Support (ELLS) programme, the NGRT is repeated each term to track progress and measure the impact of support. Results are reviewed by the ELLS Coordinator alongside class teachers’ assessments and knowledge of each child’s prior performance.Where needed, students also complete individual assessments such as the York Assessment of Reading for Comprehension (YARC), enabling us to tailor targeted intervention plans that support steady, sustained progress.
Our intensive ELLS programme is tailored to each phase of the school.Primary students on the intensive programme are withdrawn from mainstream lessons in English, Phonics, Humanities and, where appropriate, Learning for Life for small-group support matched to their needs. They also receive in-class support for Science, attend five early-morning ELLS sessions each week (8.15 – 8.45am), and are withdrawn from mainstream language lessons if their first language is not Thai.Secondary students on the intensive programme are withdrawn from mainstream English, History and, where appropriate, Learning for Life for focused small-group teaching. They are taught in small groups for Science and receive in-class ELLS support in Geography. They attend five early-morning ELLS sessions weekly (8.15 – 8.45am), and ELLS lessons take place during timetabled language classes if Thai is not their first language.
Our Transitional Support Programme offers a flexible blend of in-class and small-group support to help students move confidently towards full independence in English. In Primary, this includes in-class support in English, Humanities and Science, targeted Spelling, Punctuation and Grammar sessions, daily early-morning ELLS (8:15–8:45am) and withdrawal for small-group reading interventions. In Secondary, learners receive in-class support in English and Geography, intensive or in-class ELLS for History, small-group Science, daily early-morning ELLS and withdrawal for focused reading intervention, ensuring a smooth, well-supported transition into the mainstream curriculum.
Primary students receive homework from their class teacher, with tasks adapted where needed to support their English development.Secondary students on our ELLS Programme receive homework set by their ELLS teacher, rather than the mainstream subject homework, but with a similar overall time commitment. This allows tasks to be carefully matched to each learner’s language level and current targets. If there are any barriers to completing homework - such as limited access to a device, lack of time at home, or work that feels too easy or too challenging - families are encouraged to speak directly with the ELLS or class teacher.
For families of children learning English as an additional language, partnership with home is essential. Continued use of the home language – speaking together, reading aloud and encouraging independent reading in any language, strengthens thinking skills and knowledge that can be transferred into English. Maintaining and valuing the first language also supports a strong sense of identity, allowing children to feel proud of their cultural heritage as they become bilingual or multilingual. At the same time, a wide circle of friends is key to social confidence: because English is the shared language of the whole school community, its use is encouraged during playtimes and meal times so that all students feel included and able to join in.
Learning support at TPIS is designed to help every child access learning confidently and successfully. Wherever possible, support is provided within the mainstream classroom, with students sometimes withdrawn for short, specialist sessions such as reading booster classes. At our private school in Thailand, provision may include small-group or one-to-one support both in and out of class, as well as targeted reading intervention.
For students with more significant learning needs, TPIS works in partnership with qualified external educational services. Families are encouraged to share any existing reports or involvement with learning support, speech and language therapy or enrichment programmes at the start of the application process, so that the right support can be in place from day one.
At our international school in Pattaya, learners who consistently outperform expectations are empowered to thrive through an enriched, personalised curriculum that reflects their unique strengths and passions. Extension tasks, cross-curricular projects and opportunities for independent inquiry provide stretch and challenge beyond the core programme, while access to specialist activities, competitions and leadership roles ensures that high potential is recognised, nurtured and transformed into real achievement.

The English Language & Learning Support (ELLS) programme is designed for students who need additional support with English or accessing the curriculum. It helps learners build the language, confidence and academic skills needed to succeed in an international school environment.
All students are assessed on entry using recognised tools such as reading-age tests and standardised assessments. Progress is then tracked regularly, allowing teachers to adjust support quickly and ensure steady improvement.
No. The programme is carefully structured so students can access the curriculum while developing their English. Support is tailored to ensure they continue making academic progress alongside their peers.
Both pathways are personalised based on each child’s needs.
Progress varies depending on the student, but regular assessments and targeted teaching ensure clear, measurable improvement over time. The focus is on sustainable progress rather than short-term results.
In some cases, students may be withdrawn from selected lessons for targeted support, particularly in the Intensive programme. However, wherever possible, support is delivered within the classroom to maintain continuity and inclusion.
The programme helps students build confidence, friendships and a sense of belonging. By developing communication skills and encouraging participation, students feel more comfortable engaging in school life.
Homework is adapted to each student’s level, ensuring it is achievable and meaningful. In some cases, ELLS homework replaces mainstream tasks so that students can focus on the most impactful learning.
Strong home–school partnership is key. Parents are encouraged to:
